DIY 'One For The Road' Leather Jacket | CarolynNotCaroline

It's festival season and in a few short days the Arctic Monkeys will take to the stage at one of Ireland's largest festivals, Electric Picnic. Alex Turner (lead vocals) recently paraded a leather jacket and written on the back of it were the words 'One For The Road', a title of a song from their soon to be released album 'AM' in September.

Anyway, I thought it looked pretty cool and decided sure, I'll make my own as I'm a huge fan of the band and their music.

I found a template of the words from the internet and I traced the lettering onto a piece of card paper.
I placed that onto the back of my leather jacket (old one from Primark) to make sure the sizing looked correct.

I used a scissors I then cut out the lettering, placed it on the jacket and outlined each letter like a stencil with a pen.

Then using white acrylic paint (without any water other than to clean my brushes) I painted onto the jacket. As acrylic paint drys quite quickly be sure to move fast with the brush in order to cover as much of the area as possible before it dries and becomes lumpy.

After colouring in each letter I noticed a few smudges of white paint around some letters that of course shouldn't be there. So if you have made any mistakes in (smudging the paint that has now dried up or simply accidentally painted outside the stencil).

I used a black pen, or you could use black acrylic paint but I suggest the pen as it's easier to work with and more than likely you may smudge the black paint if you don't have a steady hand.

I left the jacket to dry hanging over my mirror or you could just place it on a hanger and there you have it Alex Turner's 'One For The Road' black leather jacket design.

  3. This is really cool and thanks for the guide :) I have a question - will this design be affected by rain? Is there any sort of spray or something I can get that'll waterproof it if needed?

    1. Hi, you're welcome!
I wore this to a festival where it was raining and it was totally fine.
Once you apply acrylic paint on clothes it's near impossible to get out unless you use rubbing alcohol on it.
Hope this helps, thanks for commenting! :)

  5. Really awesome ! I have a question :-) Does the acrylic paint, that you used, holds well on your leather jacket? What kind did you use? Thanks

    1. Thank you! Yeah it did for the time I wore the jacket. 9 months later, only one of the lettering has slight cracks but I think that's because I didn't use enough paint on that section.
I used Daler Rowney System 3 white acrylic paint :)

  6. Did you have to print the lettering on a3 paper or did you just do it on a4?

    1. I used A4 purely because the jacket I used was a small size but I'd recommend doing it on A3!
